Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Monday, November 6

Depart USA

Depart the USA for your overnight flight to Rome. Dinner and breakfast will be served on board.

Day 2: Tuesday, November 7

Arrive in Rome

Welcome to Rome! Also known as the “Eternal City,” Rome is one of the most magnificent and interesting cities in the world. You will be transported to your hotel where you will have free time to unpack and relax. We will head to Mass, followed by dinner with wine, and a Welcome meeting. In the evening we will walk to St. Peter’s Square for a Rosary (optional).

Day 3: Wednesday, November 8

Vatican City

Following breakfast, we will make our way to St. Peter’s Square to attend the Papal Audience with Pope Francis. (The Papal Audience takes place every Wednesday, pending the pope’s schedule.)

In the afternoon, we will visit Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, and the Basilica of St. John the Lateran—the pope’s cathedral church where relics of both Saint Peter and Saint Paul remain under the main altar. It was here that Pope Francis was formally installed as Bishop of Rome. Next, we will cross the street to see the Holy Staircase, which is believed to be a staircase from Pilate’s palace in Jerusalem that Saint Helen brought to Rome in the fourth century. (You will have the option of climbing the steps on your knees in memory of Christ’s Passion.) Then we will continue to the Basilica of St. Mary Major where we will celebrate Mass. St. Mary Major is the oldest and most important church dedicated to Our Lady, and contains a relic from Jesus’ manger. After Mass, we will have dinner, followed by a meeting and overnight.

Day 4: Thursday, November 9

Vatican City

After breakfast, we will go to Vatican City to celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. The grandest of the world’s churches and unsurpassed in beauty, St. Peter’s Basilica was built on the site where Saint Peter was martyred. Pilgrims come from around the world to see this monument and marvel at the Pieta and Bernini’s amazing bronze canopy.

Following Mass, we will visit the Vatican Museums, containing some of the most impressive edifices and hundreds of galleries filled with art treasures. See awe-inspiring relics and works of art donated throughout the centuries as tributes of faith. We will cover The Tapestry Gallery, The Raphael Rooms, and the Sistine Chapel. The tour ends as we make our way back into St. Peter’s Basilica.

Pope Francis was the first pontiff to visit the tomb of Saint Peter since extensive archaeological excavations were done decades ago. We will visit Saint Peter’s tomb and the tomb of Saint John Paul II, both located in St. Peter’s Basilica. After lunch, we will visit the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. As we continue our tour via the Appian Way—the oldest road from Roman times—we will see the famous Church of Domine Quo Vadis, the ancient Baths of Caracalla, the Arch of Drusus, the Tomb of Celilia Metella, and the catacombs of Saint Callixtus where the early Christians hid themselves to escape persecution. We will conclude our day with dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 5: Friday, November 10

Rome & Assisi

Following breakfast, we will travel through the countryside to the Cathedral of Orvieto, which was originally planned as a residence for the pope. This 14th century Roman Catholic cathedral houses the Corporal of Bolsena, and contains chapels with some of the most magnificent frescoes you will ever see. In fact, San Brizio Chapel’s depiction of heaven and hell rivals those of the Sistine Chapel. We will stop for lunch and then make our way to Assisi, the hometown of Saint Francis. We will have dinner at our hotel in Assisi.

Day 6: Saturday, November 11

Today we will tour the quaint hilltop town of Assisi. We will visit the home of Saint Francis—the saint who inspired our Holy Father—the Basilica of St. Francis, and the Basilica of St. Clare. (Saint Claire founded the Order of Poor Clares.) Contained within the huge 13th century Basilica of St. Francis are the saint’s possessions, a series of frescoes depicting his life, and the crucifix from which Jesus spoke to Saint Francis asking him to rebuild his church. We will have lunch and then you will have a free afternoon to enjoy the medieval streets of the little town of Assisi. Dinner will be at the hotel, followed by a group meeting and a restful night sleep.

Day 7: Sunday, November 12

After breakfast, we will head to beautiful Florence. A true paradise for culture and art lovers, Florence attracted the greatest artists of the Renaissance: Dante, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Donatello, and many others. We will enjoy a guided tour, which will include the magnificent Franciscan church Basilica of the Holy Cross. With its beautiful façade, the basilica is the burial place of several nobles, including Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli. On our walking tour through Piazza Signoria, we will pass by Palazzo Vecchio (the town hall), The Uffizi Gallery (a prominent art museum), and Ponte Vecchio (a bridge over the Arno River). We will continue through Republic Square to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

After lunch, we will visit L’Accadamia where we will view Michelangelo’s “David” as well as other works of art. You will have some free time to stroll the streets of Florence and enjoy some of the best shopping in Italy. We will then make our way back to Assisi in time to gather for dinner and share stories of our day. (Overnight is in Assisi.)

Day 8: Monday, November 13

Today we will visit St. Mary of the Angels Basilica, where Saint Francis spent most of his life. We will see Portiuncola (the small chapel located inside the basilica), the rose bush, and the cave where the saint retired for prayer. The afternoon is yours to enjoy some last minute shopping, or to stroll the streets of Assisi.
We will have dinner, followed by our final group meeting, and overnight in Italy.

Day 9: Tuesday, November 14

Depart Rome

Following breakfast, we will board the bus that will bring us to the Rome airport for our return flights home. We will bid farewell to our new friends and to a pilgrimage that will be in our memories and hearts for a long time to come.
