St. John of the Cross

In the twilight of life, God will not judge us by our earthly possessions or human success, but rather by how much we have loved.

St. John of the Cross (1542–1591) was a Spanish friar of the Carmelite Order. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Spanish poets who ever lived. Two of his books, Spiritual Canticle and Dark Night of the Soul, are considered masterpieces of the Spanish language. In them he writes of the soul’s union with God and the trials it must overcome in order to strengthen that relationship. He also wrote Ascent of Mount Carmel, Living Flame of Love, and Sayings of Light and Love.
